Joe Nathan christening Stony Brook field
Major League Baseball pitcher Joe Nathan will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday at Stony Brook University’s new baseball field — a facility the Stony Brook alum helped fund.
Nathan, the Minnesota Twins’ all-time leader in saves, is a 1997 graduate of Stony Brook.
He donated $500,000 to his alma mater for the new field. The field is named in his honor — Joe Nathan Field.
After graduating from Stony Brook, the lifelong movie fan studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute in new York City, where he met his wife, Trista. He landed many acting roles, including a part as an FBI agent in the movie Ransom, starring Mel Gibson and directed by Ron Howard. The money he earned from that project allowed him to produce and direct his first short film, Open Season.
“I had an idea I really liked, and I just set out to make the film,” Chris says. “I was able to sell it to Showtime and other outlets.”
The Syosset native came to Stony Brook in 1988 and played defensive back and then starting cornerback for the Patriots under Head Coach Sam Kornhauser. Defensive coordinator for the team at the time was Coach Dave Caldiero and position coach was Coach Jim Steigerwald.
“I loved playing there, and I loved my coaches,” he says. “After I graduated I went into this other life, but I still keep in touch with the guys from Stony Brook. Chris Cassidy, who was a senior when I was a freshman, and I became really close after college and worked together. He was director of photography on one of my short films.”

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook University Athletics and Cablevision have announced a television partnership to broadcast 11 Seawolves basketball games during the 2011-12 season that will deliver action-packed Seawolves content to the entire Long Island community, Director of Athletics Jim Fiore released Tuesday. It is the largest single provider television package in the department’s history.
“We are thrilled and excited to form a partnership with Cablevision’s Optimum Local, which will give Seawolves Athletics unparalleled exposure in 2011-12,” Fiore said. “Stony Brook Athletics is synonymous with Long Island, and we are excited to deliver our talented teams to our fans across Nassau and Suffolk County. We have been focused on casting a wider net to connect with Seawolves fans and build our athletic brand, especially among our local community. This partnership demonstrates such a commitment.”
Stony Brook will produce its own broadcasts for men’s and women’s basketball and will use Internet technology to feed the production to Cablevision, airing on Channel 118, which is available to all Cablevision cable television customers across Long Island.
