Lesego Andrew Goba ’09 ’12 – Umuntu, Umuntu Ngabantu – A Journey from South Africa to the USA

Umuntu, Umuntu Ngabantu – A Journey from South Africa to the USA

BY  | OCTOBER 15, 2012 · 9:07 AM

Two weeks ago former coach and PPI success story, Lesego Andrew Goba, stopped by the DC office. For many of us, it was our first opportunity to meet Goba and hear his incredible journey from South Africa to the USA

Lesego Andrew Goba playing in his final year at Stony Brook University

On the outskirts of Durban is Inanda, a rural village not unlike many villages in South Africa. Although most houses had no running water, electricity or even telephones, Goba viewed his rural upbringing as a positive. “Scarcity of resources taught me to be grateful for what I had; and inspired me to pursue that which I did not have, fearlessly, because I had nothing to lose.”….

….After graduating Goba got a second BS in nursing and has recently begun working at the Stony Brook Medical Hospital in the Psychiatric Department. He now aspires to continue his education as a psychiatric nurse practitioner (masters level), and get his doctorate. “My education was the paved road that I could now walk on. I had to maximize the opportunity.”

Stony Brook University seeks 75,000 votes for Pink Glove Dance video by 10/26/12

STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 15, 2012 – Stony Brook Medicine has entered the second annual national Pink Glove video competition, sponsored by MedLine Industries Inc., with a four-minute video capturing the spirit of Stony Brook physicians and staff, as well as the broader Stony Brook community, in their dedication to fighting breast cancer. On Friday, Oct. 12, voting opened nationwide to determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer research.

“We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two weeks’ time.”

Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in 2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, Oct. 26, and the winners will be announced on Nov. 2.
